2018-2019 Conferring with Writers
Section: PARA20190004

"Helping students become better readers is what reading conferences are all about," says Carl Anderson.  Participants will explore the underlying principles and reasons for conferring with students, and how to make writing conferences part of a daily routine.

Learning outcomes:

*Read and study Carl Anderson's A Teacher's Guide to Writing Conferences, Grades K-8, in order to:

*Define what a writing conference is

*Identify the actions a teacher might take before, during, and after a conference

*Identify the parts of a conference and the three moves a teacher makes during the conference

*Identify the role and actions a student takes during a writing conference

*Plan for, practice, and implement conferring during Writing Workshop

*Reflect on conferring practices and debrief a writing conference with a colleague

The course also includes up to 4.5 hours of coaching collaboration in optional follow-up sessions scheduled with the participant and building coach.  Each 1.5 session will include:
*Planning for the co-conferring or modeling of conferring
*Co-conferring or modeling conferring in the classroom with students
*Debrief conversation to reflect on the learning and set next steps for conferring

Documentation of the follow up sessions will be reported on the 2018-2019 In Class Coaching Clock Hour form.
